Agreed on Wemby, but now, finding retail blasters in the wild is going to be pretty difficult again. I kinda liked seeing Prizm and Optic sitting out there once in a while. It sounds like this coming year’s products will be available aplenty, considering the rookies aren’t supposed to be too hot. I have a feeling we’ll find out in a couple years that a middle pick guy slipped through to become big, like Giannis.
It seems in all sports now, finding that middle pick guy that comes out of nowhere is the way to go. There is so much data and hype around all the big names that you can never find a good deal on their card, however, there is always one or two that will surprise you, Albert Pujols anyone? 13th round selection, obviously this seems to happen more in baseball and hockey, less in basketball, but you never know. With respect to Wemby, I would love to see a card with him and David Robinson on it together, that would be sweet, both with their ROY trophies.
Good point about the big guys being too expensive. For basketball, it seems like “the middle” is actually anyone drafted outside of the top-5 guys. Steph, Kawhi, Giannis, Shai, Haliburton, Booker, all picked after top-5! Might be an interesting research project to see how long it took each of these guys to ascend to stardom. Three years? So if we look back to the 2021 NBA Draft, who are some outside-of-top-5 guys who could emerge as superstars? Giddey, Kuminga, Wagner, Sengun and Jalen Johnson are all candidates in my book!
Would be a great research project. Lots to consider in this. Does position played impact this? What about the team that drafted them, are they good or bad? New coach, veteran coach? I think we need to assign this to a doctoral candidate to help us know which mid-round draft pick will be the next Steph Curry so we can properly know which cards to get while they are still cheap.
Well done as always. We may need to find a way to give a shout out to West Point next week as we managed to mention Air Force Academy (Skenes) and Naval Academy (Robinson and Jimmy Carter) in this episode.
Great read, David and really nice write up on Skenes by Patrick.
As for Wemby, he has definitely attracted this collector, as I’ve been compelled to buy more basketball product this year than my usual.
Well done, fellas, enjoyed it!
