Wow, 2005 is a Pittsburgh fans dream come true: Sid, Cutch, and Troy, three of the best to ever do it in their respective sports. I still wonder if Cutch is a future HOF guy, a lot of people say Joey Votto is but not Cutch, despite having very similar numbers and playing in very similar markets
So, to keep your Top 11 list going, I have a few more:
12. Selling cards on eBay that are worth under $2 yet charging $8 for shipping. Throw those in a PWE and mail them off for under $1. (I understand eBay used to only charge fee's based on listing price and not shipping, but that changed to include shipping a long time ago)
13. The Make an Offer Option: Two parts to this. Part 1, if you are making an offer, don't ask for more than %50 off, that is just insulting to the seller. Part 2, if you are the seller, don't tell us we can make an offer if you aren't willing to accept an offer. I have had sellers counter my offer with the exact price of the listing before, I was dumbfounded. If you are using this option, you must be willing to at least take %10 off.
14. Athletes who buy all their cards: I am all for when an athlete see's their card on a post on social media and reaches out to make a trade for it, that is cool and connects the collector to the athlete. Where I think it gets bad is when the athlete buys up every numbered card and their are none left for the collectors of the world.
Airing of the grievances complete, now on to feats of strength!
My HOF Vote: Cutch is in. I think in 10-15 years, all the old voters will be long gone, and younger voters, who respect fantasy and analytics, will agree that during McCutchen's prime, there were very few better. (I'm also in for Votto.)
Second note on HOF: Expansion has added several teams, international players are making marks in the game, both leagues playing against each other in-season, pitch clock, no more plowing through catchers, TJ surgery, shifts (for a while), Bullpen Games, there are so many changes to the game, it's time to start being less reliant on players with 10-15 year dominance for HOF classes, and look closer at the 5-10 year guys. IMO.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE No. 12 and 13!!! Absolutely, great calls.
No opinion on No. 14, it's never really affected me. I always thought it was odd a player buys his superfractor, but if I was young, rich and sports famous, I guess I'd want that also. But to buy up all numbered ones? That's dumb -- why would you want that? Wouldn't you want people excited about getting your card? Maybe it's their version of investing in themselves? Even then, if you're great, you'll make so much more money than whatever these values become. And if you stink, you'll be mad you wasted that money on your own cards. Hahaha
Both parts of number 13 are a huge one for me, Patrick!
Cutch and Votto also make it in my HOF.
I don’t know much about number 14, but I will completely hijack the opportunity to say back when my brother and I sold more often, I thought it was insanely cool when we found out we were selling a card to the actual player, and were communicating with his wife! It was a fairly rare Shin-Soo Choo.
I have another short anecdote about me communicating and selling some cards (not his) to a football player, but that one doesn’t seemingly have as cool an ending. If anyone actually cares, ask me about it sometime in a more private setting.
Wow, what a shoutout! Thanks so much, David! It’s absolutely my pleasure to be around this awesome Happy Hobby Community that you’ve created!
What a great article about those ever-present hobby rascals! Had experiences with every single one on the list, and I agree! I really enjoyed the quote about the gorgeous lady with the mole!
Looks like a really good year all around for rookies in 2005!
