Sometimes, things just don’t make sense in the sports card collecting world, and that’s where we come in, to point out these discrepancies! We picked some great undervalued rookie cards in baseball, basketball and football. Hopefully, our hockey-loving buddy Patrick Imhoff will comment with one of his favorite hockey rookie cards he believes is undervalued!
Manny Machado, SS/3B, Baltimore Orioles/L.A. Dodgers/San Diego Padres
We’re going to point to the JAWS system developed by Jay Jaffe at Baseball-Reference as our measurement for who should be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. For third basemen, the only three active players among the top-20 in JAWS are Evan Longoria (50.3), Nolan Arenado (49.7), and Machado (49.1). I believe all three should be in the HOF, although, my guy, Longo, might fall a bit short. Arenado and Machado are still young enough to make a run for the top-15 (53.4), and possibly the top 10 (56.9).
Machado averages 30 homers and 100 RBI, no matter who is protecting him in the lineup, and he’s still 32 years old (one year younger than Arenado) with upside.
